I bet this confusion comes from auth.txt, which shows:

> Currently supported password databases:

>  - passwd: /etc/passwd or similiar, using getpwnam()
>  - shadow: /etc/shadow or similiar, using getspnam()
[...]

> 
>  - passwd: /etc/passwd or similiar, using getpwnam()

Always good to show examples of the literal syntax.
