[Dovecot] newbie question

If your system uses mbox, then you probably want to tell Dovecot to
use mbox.  

If you really want to use maildir, you can have procmail deliver to
maildirs:
(in .procmailrc):
DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/       

Note the trailing slash - that's the kicker.  

Then tell Dovecot to use maildir.

If you want to mix and match mailbox formats per user, then you'll
need to use an auth database that allows setting this (passwd-file, or
maybe ldap or sql).
