That's definitely wrong.

While this is a dim area of imap, working with subflolders (which are 
directories on the server side) and mbox mail folders is definitely 
possible.

The ususal restriction is that mailboxes are imposs^Wdiscouraged on 
the same level as subfolders, i.e you can have mailboxes on the tips 
of the tree, only, not on the nodes. Some clients (Eudora, notably) 
appear to have less problems with that than others (e.g. Mozilla).
