Thanks for the pointer. autogen now works. However, configure fails with 
the following error messages:

./configure: line 14374: syntax error near unexpected token 
`PKG_CHECK_MODULES(SSL,'
./configure: line 14374: `    PKG_CHECK_MODULES(SSL, openssl)'
