Are you sure you have that exactly? The only reason I can think of for
the error message you have is if the mechanisms list doesn't contain
"plain" in it.

Do you have multiple auth blocks then maybe? Or multiple "mechanisms"
lines? Can you just send the whole auth-block you have in dovecot.conf?
