[Dovecot] Backing up mail

Greetings,
in backing up mail stored according to

   default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

is it safe *not* to backup the .imap subdirectory ? I am currently
using dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3. When restoring, I guess the safe option
would be to zap the contents of .imap so that it gets rebuilt,
correct ?
