[Dovecot] dovecot-smtp connection?

IMAP is only for reading and organising your email.  Not for sending.  You need 
a MTA (such as sendmail, postfix, exim, etc ) to do that.

If you already have sendmail on the box, it shouldn't take much to make it send 
mail for local suers (if it doesn't already).  Otherwise, I would recommend 
Postfix, not only because it can to SMTP AUTH against Dovecot's auth daemon, but 
also because you'll find it almost as easy to set up and configure as Dovecot :)

Of course, choosing a MTA package is a holy war all its own.
