I use to get these error messages all the time to. Try changing the file
permissions to '1777' on the directory and seeing if that works. If it
does, you can try working backwards with the directory permissions until
it fails again. That will help establish the minimum permissions
required on the directory for dovecot to operate.

What MDA are you employing?
