Several years ago I found out that using ext3 with journaled data (data=journal
mount option) had very good performance in this case; when spooled mail is
delivered before journal is full and file can then be unlinked, filesystem can
skip writing to real storage altogether. No slow seeking necessary, just
streaming to journal.
