[Dovecot] Authentication problem - or is it?

I tried adding maildir:, but it made no difference.  Here is my dovecot.conf 
with all the comment lines stripped out:

base_dir = /var/run/dovecot/

info_log_path = /var/log/mail/mail.info
ssl_disable = yes
