Now I made a failed attempt. So I hope somebody else will take on the task

It does seem quite straight-forward (mostly a matter of changed
prototypes), but there was too much guesswork for me to be able to trust
the result. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to turn the guesses into
knowledge.
