Running OS X 10.4.11 here.  Also found that

1. Applying the referenced patch did not result in a clean compile
2. Had to manually comment lines referring to HAVE_POSIX_FALLOCATE in  
BOTH config.h AND config.h.in in order to get a clean compile.
