More important is the number of messages (and especially
dovecot.index.cache file's size). But 137 MB doesn't sound like much.

256 is the default and it should be enough for pretty large mailboxes.
v1.1 logs a raw backtrace on these out-of-memory errors which can
sometimes be useful in showing why it's happening.
