Hmmm...

And I just realized that I too had thought that you were using actual
Client certs, and never sent my reply with the solution. It is quite
simple actually.

Just upload the public cert to a publicly accessible directory on a
webserver, then navigate there (including the full name of the cert) in
Safari on your iPhone, and you'll get a prompt to install the cert, then
it will 'just work'...
