Thanx for advice.
But shame to me -- after all the hassle, it turned out that the harddisk had a 
bad sector exatcly in the mbox file, and I didn't see it because I was doing 
all the things I wrote above, remotely. Fortunately, I managed to clone the 
hd with dd_rhelp. Now it's up and running again.
