[Dovecot] very slow pop3 downloads

sorry for the immediate reply to my own request for help.

I just found out that the problem may not be on the machine - our upstream supplier is having the same problem on one of 
his mail servers, which is in the same datacentre.

this may not be a problem with dovecot - sorry for the waste of time!
