I have given up with Debian and now use Ubuntu.

All the lovelyness of Debian but without having to hand-roll umpteen 
packages from source just to get something that isn't 5 years out of date.

I still have to hand-roll a handful of packages, but it is only a 
handful rather than umpteen.
