I'm not really sure what you're talking about, but the change I did was supposed to be used like:

mail_plugins = quota acl virtual autocreate etc.
protoco imap {
  mail_plugins = $mail_plugins imap_quota imap_acl
}
protocol lda {
  mail_plugins = $mail_plugins sieve
}
etc.
