[Dovecot] Thunderbird log-in --->Authentication failed - password in uppercase in log files

I use dovecot 2.1.5 with postfix, amavis, spamassasin, mysql, virtual
domains only. Dovecot being used for SASL authentication, and delivery.
When I connect via telnet to port 25 or with smtp and try to do
auth plain with mmencode connection string authentication works fine. I
can send and recieve messages, and relay works as well.

Trying to set up thunderbird to connect to this server I get problems -
seems as if the password is resolved proper from the database (use
postfixadmin), but then compares an upper  case version of my password
in the MD5-CRYPT() call to the password string obtained from the
database. I do see the base64 encoded connection string in dovecot log
though.

Any ideas?

The password should be 'tester' - not 'TESTER'
