[Dovecot] Strip backslash from usernames

Hi,

Is there a way to strip a backslash if it exists at the start of 
username like \user at example.com within the Dovecot LDA? I am using 
Dovecot 2.1.9 with a LDAP backend, so I cannot do any sort of SQL trickery.
