What are the log entries for the telnet login?

good, then plenty of info should be in the logs, about home directory, 
uids etc.pp.

You seem to use system users, should be visible in the logs. Do the 
directory <user_home_dir>/Maildir and any file and directory below belong 
to the particular user? Do your users have a home directory at all?
