Meaning... the index files and the dovecot-uid* files are out of sync 
(index files are in a state from the last time I accessed the mailstore, 
before I rsync'd it again, but the dovecot-uid* files are from the state 
of the mailstore at the time of the last backup).

Would that explain it?
