You could focus on the server rather than the client.

There really could be more ways to do it than are listed on that page.
Your path forward would depend firstly on your current user database setup.

Of if you use e.g. maildir and you want to access it directly using 
something other than dovecot then you may try but it wouldn't be the 
best idea.
