This one works great for me and is very useful for smooth migration from
mbox to maildir:

dovecot-lda.sh:

args=()
if [ -d "$HOME/Maildir/INBOX" ]; then
  args+=("-onamespace/inbox/location=maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs")
fi
exec /usr/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda "${args[@]}" "$@"
