Cannot delete folder

Ehm, really, no. There is only one volume and the entire directory 
structure in in the main file system. That clearly is not the case.

I'm wondering why the directories have different permissions in the 
first place. Where are they defined?

Your problem is that your Trash folder appears to be on different volume
than the folder you are attempting to delete.
