The problems have been reported with both MS Outlook and SquirrelMail.

What causes this problem and how can I fix it?

Could you get a gdb backtrace of it? See http://dovecot.org/bugreport.html

Or can you send the mail that causes it to crash? That error alone doesn't really help.
