It's slow and it doesn't support pop3 auth initial responses which breaks eg. eudora logging in.
Well, POP3 works great for us (large 5digit number of mailboxes) using maildir. Quite speedy, too. The auth bits are not an issue here as the dovecot mailbox servers are sitting behind a cluster running perdition (pop3/imap proxy). :)
