The suggested solution from this mail works, but is this still the best solution for the error above?

With Maildir yes. Doveadm refuses to delete INBOX.

Isn't the dbox format the preferred one for long term dovecot usage?

Do the mdbox support also Shared mailboxes, I assume yes as the solution is based on dovecot's acl. https://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared
