Great to hear alpha5 will be out soon. I've been watching the cvs logs and saw a few key fixes in there. Any estimate of when 1.0 will be final? I'd loved to see it.

I fixed this sometimes after alpha4 release. I should release alpha5 soon..
In the mean time you could install http://dovecot.org/nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz which fixes it.
