Read the wiki. I can set the sticky timer on the load balanced session to a fairly high number. My only concern is this: If I change my dovecot config to store the indexes on a local disk, how do I handle each of the dovecot indexes in each of the subfolders of the clients maildir?
Recommendations?

I am still getting these in my maillog:
Jul 13 07:39:38 pop5.cfu.net dovecot: IMAP(breu@cfu.net): Corrupted index cache file /var/spool/mail/filer/storage//cfu.net/b/r/breu/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size
These should be pretty rare nowadays, so I guess they're stored in NFS? Have you looked at http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS
