1st of all: 0.99 is really old and unsopported. Try getting a new version (for example at atrpms.net)

2nd: IMO, reading mail as root is a really bad idea. You should redirect it to another non-system user.

3rd: Surely you haven't changed

#first_valid_uid = 500

Try changing it.
