Thanks for the pointers, Thomas, but as I wrote before: I used http://wiki2.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixDovecotLMTP as a starting point, but I don't think virtual_transport is valid in my particular server setup. What I needed was a means of dropping the host name in user@server.domain.tld when delivering mail via LMTP, and Timo's suggestion "auth_username_format = %Ln" works fine for me.
