Dovecot doesn't deliver mail; it serves it up. Your LDA (Local Delivery Agent), part of the MTA (Mail Transport Agent), is responsible for delivery.
But /var/mail/michael is growing steadily.
What MTA are you using (e.g. Postfix, exim, qmail, sendmail)?
