From LDAP server point of view both authentications look the same: no errors. From client point of view Thunderbird expects response from Dovecot, but it never receives it..

Are you using login_process_per_connection=yes or no?

I'm using default value (commented out) which according to my config file is yes:

#login_process_per_connection = yes
