ok so when I use 

mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u

and I restart dovecot, I get 

Starting Dovecot Imap: Fatal: Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot.conf line 199: Unknown setting: mail_location

any other suggestions?
