deliver is kind of tricky with multiple UIDs. Then it needs to be started as root, either directly by the MTA (in Postfix you can use it via mailbox_command) or by making it setuid-root.
In future Dovecot will support deliveries via LMTP and then there won't be problems with multiple UIDs. But for now it's tricky and sometimes annoying.
Dovecot works fine with multiple UIDs in my configuration when it's running by itself. If ALL users MUST be in the same group in order for this to work, so be it.
Having users be in a shared group doesn't seem like a good idea to me. You might as well have them use the same UID since they can reach each others' mails anyway then.
Is there a difference between the 'secmail' group in the docs and the 'dovecot' group in my config? Maybe, but I can't see where.
Doesn't matter what the group is called, as long as deliver can be executed.
