Michael,
it seems the rumors are right. After shortening the file 
/etc/ssl/ca-certificates.crt
to one entry, it works.

Of course this is not a solution, so a fix will be needed.
I use the "/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt"  which is included with Ubuntu impish
