For Thomas White it's the same problem. Folders "Academic" and "Theatre" are not recognised as root folders.

GMail's IMAP shouldn't be used as an example. It's one of the least standards compliant IMAP servers there is.
Which behaviour exactly is IMAP4 compliant remains to be investigated.

I assume it means that Dovecot returned "TMP.STMP" without returning "TMP". This is valid and several other IMAP servers do the same thing (Cyrus, Courier). You can even find this from RFC 3501:
C: A85 LIST "" * S: * LIST () "." foo.bar S: A85 OK LIST completed

If you just want to get this fixed for yourself, you can create the "Lists" and "TMP" mailboxes and they get returned.
