The user I am loggin in with has a uid and gid of 501, not 0! I am using passwd and shadow auth with Maildirs.
UID has multiple meanings. First is the "User ID" in authentication, but elsewhere it means IMAP's "Unique message ID". So something tried to read message 0, which never exists. It would be helpful if you could get gdb backtraces of these crashes. See http://dovecot.org/bugreport.html
