Couple of guesses:
a) The messages haven't been expunged (only marked with \Deleted flag)
b) The messages still exist in Trash
mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox
You could use doveadm to see what messages still exist. For example:
doveadm mailbox status messages '*'
