I generally do not use IMAP for this unless I'm specifically trying to troubleshoot an IMAP problem, and in those cases I might change the user's password temporarily.
The GNU Midnight Commander is an excellent integrated file manager and viewer. That's what I use.
mail to this address is discarded unless "/dev/rob0"
or "not-spam" is in Subject: header
