have you tried compiling the linux kernel a few times with make -j4?
Off topic, but I have almost never been able to induce any errors by compiling the Linux kernel, no matter how faulty the hardware (RAM). Not using -j4 though.
I found that compiling the zeroc-ice package (on Debian-based distros), which is huge, very reliably results in random crashes and aborts when relevant hardware is dying.
# apt-get source zeroc-ice # cd zeroc-ice-?.?.? # make *blam*
