The path is where the file belongs to in a "real" production environment, however, the file should reflect the place "make install" uses, esp. because the default "./configure" uses --prefix /usr/local.
From a long-time packager perspective, this is the packagers' task to patch the example to match the desired platform/distro; Axel's RPM for instance patches the example.conf in many more ways than this to be Red Hat friendly. It's my opinion Timo shouldn't have to do anything in this regards and leave the work to the distros/platforms.
The problem here is that if Timo does something in the configure/make process to change the example.conf, then applying patches by a packager (which is done against *raw* source, not configured/compiled) becomes a bit of a chore, if not a nightmare.
