in the messages file on my system. Don't really understand that one, and I've done a complete shutdown of all dovecot or *-login *-auth processes prior to the "make install" for RC8.
Sounds like you've still got a rc7 version of sbin/dovecot somehow. Try running "dovecot --version" to check. As for the other (if it's unrelated) what do you have for "max_mail_processes"?
