It's a consequence of mbox, but the "problem" is with Thunderbird's persistent interface mis-features in the name of "configurabiilty".
I'm not sure if it is proper, but you would think that the IMAP server should be able to give something in the "capabilities" dialog that lets a client know this. Or maybe it does, and Thunderbird doesn't pay attention.
