I'm curious why this is an issue ? Wont dovecot make the indexes on first use of the mbox if it finds no indexes ?

Good, can I use convert-tool to do: mbox -> mbox + indexes
I have not tested the maildir configs yet and I will have to deal with the number of files and their placement.
