That usually means no-one's listening in there. Check with netstat -ln that something really is.
The permissions on that file are so: srwxr-xr-x 1 postfix postfix 0 Sep 9 14:38 /var/spool/postfix/private/auth I've tried changin those but it didn't seem to matter.
If you delete the file and restart Dovecot, does the file get created?
