Yes, although the error message could be changed to "locking timed out". But at least now the error shouldn't be visible to clients (other than small slowdowns due to the 2 second lock wait).

Oh, right, local fs has the same problem, but not with fcntl. That's kind of weird. Then pretty much none of my ideas are valid. It rather sounds like the lock_method=dotlock handling code would be broken. But I just tried and can't reproduce this problem..
