And .dovecot.sieve is a symlink to the active sieve filter.

There is a difference between home_directory and mail directory. http://wiki2.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers/Home As i remember sieve is located in home_directory, not in mail_directory, so you need to take care because if it is not defined it will have a specific implicit path depending on your config.
