Stupid question, but does "localhost" resolve. Most systems it must appear in /etc/hosts for it to resolve. You can always specify 127.0.0.1 as the server to rule out name resolution.
Thanks for this suggestion. "localhost" does resolve (I tried to ping it, and it worked), and 127.0.0.1 does not change anything. So I guess my initial guess was wrong, and Mail must be trying to see if the network is up before even trying to log in.
